Soft jaws are a common solution for holding parts that would be difficult to fixture with standard, flat vise jaws during machining. Soft jaws, which are commonly milled from aluminium or steel, can also be 3D printed with continuous fibre reinforcement.

Soft jaws are used on CNC lathes to clamp pre-machined components for further machining to the desired accuracy. To ensure a long service life, these are made of mild steel or En24, En36, and En8. Soft jaws on three jaw chucks facilitate jaw placement. When the top tooling is mounted to the chuck, the fine serrations on the master jaws and top tooling of most three-jaw chucks used on turning centres must be properly aligned.
